Not a lot here for younger people. Mostly elderly members of the congregation, but not many of them. Decline in numbers started following the departure of Pastor Sharon Beattie in 1998. Leaving with Beattie was her enthusiasm and focus on keeping the youth and families at Clayton engaged with the church and community. Since her departure, the Church has struggled to keep attendance up.
People began leaving the church in large numbers following the reassignment of Pastor Sharon Beattie (Senior Pastor at Clayton from 1991-1998). The Pastor immediately following Beattie, Pastor Deborah K. Stevens, was not successful in keeping the momentum of Beattie's enthusiasm going. With the gradual decline of the youth group and Sunday school programs, Clayton UMC quickly lost many young members and families that had been sustaining the Church.
Following Steven's short tenure at Clayton, several pastors afterward attempted to reignite the enthusiasm, most notably Pastor Jeff Moore, who introduced some contemporary aspects to the church's programing.
An attempted partnership with Stillwater UMC bled the small church's membership further, as Stillwater's vast resources, contemporary programing, and focus on attracting families hastened Clayton's membership decline. A pastor-sharing program with Phillipsburg United Methodist Church (starting under Jeff Moore), while initially helpful, ultimately proved to be unsuccessful in attempting to maintain the fledgling church.
Unfortunately for Clayton UMC, a lack of focus on attracting families and young people since the late 90's and an explosion of other UMC churches in the area has caused the rapid decline of Clayton UMC. I expect the facility will probably be closed and sold in the near future.Added August 19, 2016 by A Google User
